The Clinic for Boundaries Studies
About the Clinic

The Clinic for Boundaries Studies is the only organisation in the UK  working around all aspects of professional boundaries and the prevention of boundary violations.

The Clinic runs preventative, recovery and remedial services.

With almost 20 years of specialist expertise (first as POPAN and then Witness) the clinic is now a community interest company, which employs some of the most experienced staff in the country.
The Clinic is therefore well placed to act as consultant to organisations who want to improve their approach to prevention.

The Clinic's specialist support services are designed to support members of the public who may have been harmed by professionals, whilst training and educational services are designed to enhance the professionalism of practitioners.

The Clinic works in a wide range of professional areas, including health, social care, religious settings, psychological therapies and education.

Support and Recovery

The Clinic provides support services for people who feel they have been harmed by a professional in a position of trust.

Consultation
Confidential telephone support and advice sessions to explore any aspect of possible professional abuse. We also  encourage this service to be used to `check out' whether the behavior of a professional is justified.

Specialist therapy
A service to help deal with the effects of professional abuse.  We are in the process of compiling a register of professionals who have an enhanced understanding of boundary violations and are specialists in treating clients who have been affected by professional abuse.

Witness support
To help with professional conduct processes or other forms of raising concerns.

Structured recovery program
For people who have been affected by professional abuse this is an opportunity to increase knowledge and to develop further skills about how to move forward.  This will appeal to people who want to understand their situation and need support but don’t want therapy.
Training and Education for Professionals

We run a range of courses about  boundaries and preventing boundary transgressions.  We develop bespoke courses for organisations and open sessions for all sectors.

We also run intensive professional development courses for professionals who are subject to investigation in relation to boundary transgressions.  These courses benefit the public by ensuring that transgressing professionals understand the effects of their actions and are able to develop strategies to reduce the likelihood of transgressions occurring in the future.
Resources

The Clinic has access to a wide range of resources for people who wish to extend their knowledge and understanding about professional boundaries.

Staff and faculty publish in professional journals and information is added to the website periodically.

On the Resources page there is a list of key reading material and we will be adding to this store over the coming months.

Our Code of Ethics is also available to download here.

Understanding and Preventing the Adverse Effects of Psychological Therapies -  AdEPT

The University of Sheffield has been funded to examine adverse effects in psychological therapies.

If you have experienced therapy as a therapist or client, that you feel has ‘gone wrong’ or been harmful, the research teams would like  to hear from you. It doesn’t matter whether you have used NHS services or not but you need to live in England and be aged 18 years or older in order to take part.

There are different ways to take part in the study: filling in a questionnaire, being interviewed, and/or taking part in a focus group. All participants
are asked to complete an initial questionnaire.
