This course is a small-group based programme which aims to help people in the professions improve their awareness and responsibility around establishing and maintaining professional ethics. The course is solely for people with identified problems about ethics related matters, such as honesty, probity, low level civil offences or general conduct matters.
Ethical or probity issues relevant for the course may include: dishonesty; plagiarism/misattribution; research/audit fraud; falsifying notes; breaching confidentiality; failing to maintain accurate records; unauthorised accessing of records; inaccurate CV's; misuse of prescription or non-prescription medication; causing unnecessary delays in the progression of cases; personal criminal or civil cases which affect work; emotional over-involvement with patients or non-sexualised inappropriate interactions with patients.
If the issues primarily concern sexualised behaviour then the course 'Maintaining Professional Boundaries' is suitable; if the concern is mainly about interpersonal behaviours then the course 'Maintaining Professional Relationships' is the appropriate one. Please note that collectively these three courses replace the previous course 'Maintaining Proper Boundaries'.

Who is the program for? The course is for practitioners who have a particular need to look at ethics. It may be helpful to professionals who have concerns about ethics, or are in the early stages of disciplinary or conduct hearings or other professional processes. Participants may have admitted or have been subject to a finding of fact in relation to ethics or probity, or may have been subject to a finding by a court.
When would a referral to this program be appropriate? Human resources departments can use the program as a preventative measure or as part of employee development plans. Practitioners can self-refer. Regulatory panels can refer participants as part of suspension or conditions of practice orders. Medical defence or professional organisations can refer people at any stage of proceedings.
Course Aims The course aims to provide an educational and reflective space for participants to examine the roots of their problematic behaviour and to have assistance in making personal and professional changes. The course goals are:
- To increase professional responsibility and awareness
- To increase awareness and understanding of vulnerabilities and risk factors
- To identify contextual factors
- To put in place a personal plan
The completion of the development plan, which is a series of measurable commitments around behaviour, is a core component and runs from beginning to end of the course.
Course Objectives By the end of the course, participants will:
- Improve understanding of personal history and antecedents to problematic behaviour
- Consider needs for further professional assistance and personal development
- Understand the impact of actions on others
- Learn techniques for establishing and maintaining sound ethical practice
- Improve understanding of professional role
How the course is organised Course numbers are restricted. There is some pre-course work to do, including reading and a reflection exercise. The course itself is highly interactive and involves being accountable and transparent, being open to seeing things from a different perspective and being willing to make changes. There is a lot of space for considering the contexts for the behaviours of concern as well as for developing a personal plan to avoid repetition. Content includes:
- Ethics theory
- Risk factors and vulnerabilities
- Psychological concepts (such as counter-transference)
- Cognitive distortions
- Legal and regulatory
- Remediation and rehabilitation
Alongside this content there are many spaces for participants to reflect on their actions, to have a conversation about responsibility and avoiding repetition and to make their own plans. The course hours reflect this comprehensive approach:
- Day 1- 9.00am - 6.30pm
- Day 2 - 9.00am - 6.30pm
- Day 3 - 9.00am - 5.00pm
There are regular breaks. Two course vegetarian lunches as well as tea and coffee are provided.
Expectations of participants Participants are accepted for the programme following initial discussion by phone with the course leader. The course requires access to any relevant documents in relation to professional conduct enquiries, and may request access to any other material that may be relevant, such as evaluation reports.
Participants are expected to commit to attendance for every session of the course. The programme is unlikely to be suitable for people with untreated psychiatric disorders and we may ask permission to discuss any health problem with treating professionals.
Participation is voluntary. The course is not suitable for people who wholly deny the existence of a problem or issue. Participants are asked to take responsibility for contributing actively throughout.
